… is a Renaissance Woman - an internationally well respected Artist/Producer and Doctor of Traditional Chinese and Natural Medicine, who successfully integrates Music, Medicine and the Arts. Scarlett (real name) is the daughter of 56ers from Hungary.
Her father Imre a Hungarian Freedom Fighter, helped save the pretty singer/artist Éva who was shaking like a leaf, as Russian tanks stationed in front of her apartment started firing. Éva was a singer in one of Imre’s choirs. She knocked on his door at four in the morning wearing high heels and like so many others, she was carrying her life possessions in four pieces of luggage and a small hand bag – by today’s standards a Gucci purse – which she had saved up to buy for two years. She was nineteen. Imre hastily told her to take off her high-heels, took out his bicska, a pocket knife, and in two swift slashes cut off the heels of her shoes. He handed them back for her to wear, thrust her four bags into the deep cold of the night and asked her if she was now ready to flee. Some time later, Éva became his wife.Scarlett grew up with a strong Hungarian background – her baby food was kis szalonna katonák -- little bacon soldiers -- with a dash of paprika while her mother - Éva - sang Hungarian operettas and folksongs like Szép vagy, gyönyörű vagy Magyarország, and her father - Imre - sang Hazám Hazám , an aria from the Hungarian opera: Bánk Bán - thus her passion for world music and Hungarian culture.
Discussions around the dinner table centered on international politics, current affairs and recitation of the great Hungarian Poets like Arany, Ady, Petőfi, Berzsenyi, József Attila etc. followed by the singing and playing of Hungarian music- Liszt, Bartók, Kodály, Dohnányi, Takács etc., around an old and much used dilapidated piano.
There was always much discourse on Hungary’s plight for freedom especially when Freedom Fighters would come together and the ‘Egri Bikavér’ (Hungarian red wine) was poured and more songs flowed, ‘Rózsa Levél’… While growing up, original Hungarian music, essays, poems were composed and performed throughout North America for Hungarian and Non-Hungarian cultural affairs.Her father, Imre conducted the Liszt Ferenc Kamara Kórus for 15 years where both Imre and Éva were soloists. Scarlett began singing on stage and accompanying the choir from the early age of 8, later performing songs from their CD of Operettas and Folksongs called Trio. They received numerous awards for their contribution in promoting Hungarian music and culture from the Canadian Government, the United States, Hungary and from their many fans.
In 1997 Scarlett began interviewing hundreds of people from all walks of life in Europe and then North America who partook in the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.Her journey to discover her historic roots lead her to develop http://project56.org as a tribute to her parents and to all those who fought for their natural birthright - Freedom! -- A commemoration for the heroes of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, those who escaped, endured or made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their life to defeat the manipulating, ruthless and oppressive, fear driven Soviet-Communist style political system.
What began as an innocently initiated journal about how her parents met during the events of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, snowballed into a worldwide journey of a series of discoveries posing serious questions about civilization, politics, world domination, agendas, and simply “Why,” “Who” and ‘’What for?” Scarlett’s timely Book of Compilations, Freedom ’56, includes a wealth of submissions from all over the world. It creates an opportunity for 56ers to tell their story, allowing time for healing the person and the country. Its contribution is to give us and future generations a better understanding of what really happened and how a small nation with strong convictions helped spark the demise of a big oppressive political paradigm that we are indeed fortunate today to be free of.
